Thanksgiving is a holiday where families gather to share stories, football games are watched on television and a big feast is served. It is also the time of the month when people talk about Native Americans. But does one ever wonder why we celebrate this national holiday? Why does everyone give thanks?

History is never simple. The standard history of Thanksgiving tells us that the “Pilgrims and Indians” feasted for three days, right? Most Americans believe that there was some magnificent bountiful harvest. In the Thanksgiving story, are the “Indians” even acknowledged by a tribe? No, because everyone assumes “Indians” are the same. So, who were these Indians in 1621?
In 1620, Pilgrims arrived on the Mayflower naming the land Plymouth Rock. One fact that is always hidden is that the village was already named Patuxet and the Wampanoag Indians lived there for thousands of years. To many Americans, Plymouth Rock is a symbol. Sad but true many people assume, “It is the rock on which our nation began.” In 1621, Pilgrims did have a feast but it was not repeated years thereafter. So, it wasn’t the beginning of a Thanksgiving tradition nor did Pilgrims call it a Thanksgiving feast. Pilgrims perceived Indians in relation to the Devil and the only reason why they were invited to that feast was for the purpose of negotiating a treaty that would secure the lands for the Pilgrims. The reason why we have so many myths about Thanksgiving is that it is an invented tradition. It is based more on fiction than fact.

So, what truth ought to be taught? In 1637, the official Thanksgiving holiday we know today came into existence. (Some people argue it formally came into existence during the Civil War, in 1863, when President Lincoln proclaimed it, which also was the same year he had 38 Sioux hung on Christmas Eve.) William Newell, a Penobscot Indian and former chair of the anthropology department of the University of Connecticut, claims that the first Thanksgiving was not “a festive gathering of Indians and Pilgrims, but rather a celebration of the massacre of 700 Pequot men, women and children.” In 1637, the Pequot tribe of Connecticut gathered for the annual Green Corn Dance ceremony. Mercenaries of the English and Dutch attacked and surrounded the village; burning down everything and shooting whomever try to escape. The next day, Newell notes, the Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony declared: “A day of Thanksgiving, thanking God that they had eliminated over 700 men, women and children.” It was signed into law that, “This day forth shall be a day of celebration and thanksgiving for subduing the Pequots.” Most Americans believe Thanksgiving was this wonderful dinner and harvest celebration. The truth is the “Thanksgiving dinner” was invented both to instill a false pride in Americans and to cover up the massacre.

Was Thanksgiving really a massacre of 700 “Indians”? The present Thanksgiving may be a mixture of the 1621 three-day feast and the “Thanksgiving” proclaimed after the 1637 Pequot massacre. So next time you see the annual “Pilgrim and Indian display” in a shopping window or history about other massacres of Native Americans, think of the hurt and disrespect Native Americans feel. Thanksgiving is observed as a day of sorrow rather than a celebration. This year at Thanksgiving dinner, ponder why you are giving thanks.
William Bradford, in his famous History of the Plymouth Plantation, celebrated the Pequot massacre:
“Those that scraped the fire were slaine with the sword; some hewed to peeces, others rune throw with their rapiers, so as they were quickly dispatchte, and very few escapted. It was conceived they thus destroyed about 400 at this time. It was a fearful sight to see them thus frying in the fyer, and the streams of blood quenching the same, and horrible was the stincke and sente there of, but the victory seemed a sweete sacrifice, and they gave the prayers thereof to God, who had wrought so wonderfully for them, thus to inclose their enemise in their hands, and give them so speedy a victory over so proud and insulting an enimie.”The Pequot massacre came after the colonists, angry at the murder of an English trader suspected by the Pequots of kidnapping children, sought revenge. rather than fighting the dangerous Pequot warriors, John Mason and John Underhill led a group of colonists and Native allies to the Indian fort in Mystic, and killed the old men, women, and children who were there. Those who escaped were later hunted down. The Pequot tribe numbered 8,000 when the Pilgrims arrived, but disease had brought their numbers down to 1,500 by 1637. The Pequot “War” killed all but a handful of remaining members of the tribe.
Proud of their accomplishments, Underhill wrote a book (above) depicted the burning of the village, and even made an illustration showing how they surrounded the village to kill all within it.

WET DRUIST IN TEGEN DE GRONDWET EN EUROPEES VERDRAG VOOR DE RECHTEN VAN DE MENS

Sinds 21 september dit jaar slaat onze regering de vingerafdrukken van alle Nederlanders op, met de bedoeling ze in een centrale database te verzamelen. De beslissing om deze database aan te leggen is geruisloos door de Eerste en Tweede Kamer geloodst. En nu lijkt de Nederlandse burger voor een voldongen feit te staan: wie een nieuw paspoort of nieuwe identiteitskaart haalt, is verplicht vingerafdrukken af te geven. Maar wat zijn de risico's, wat is het nut en is dit juridisch toelaatbaar? Wij maken ons hier grote zorgen over!

Het doel van de databank is "veiligheid". Maar deze en vergelijkbare maatregelen, maken Nederland voor iedere burger juist minder veilig. Het opslaan van de vingerafdrukken van alle Nederlanders in één gigantische database leidt tot hoge kosten en is vrijwel niet meer terug te draaien. De verzameldrift ten behoeve van de veiligheid suggereert ook dat wij allemaal als potentiële verdachten worden gezien. Het maakt misbruik van deze gegevens bovendien veel makkelijker. Hierdoor verandert de machtsbalans tussen overheid en burgers ingrijpend. En wie weet wie er over 20 jaar aan de macht is?

Daarbij komt dat de overheid met deze database criminaliteit niet beter kan bestrijden. Vingerafdrukken zijn eenvoudig na te maken en het risico op identiteitsfraude is dus groot. Bovendien wordt de database een interessant doelwit voor criminelen, die zo in één slag de beschikking kunnen krijgen over persoonlijke gegevens van alle Nederlanders die vanaf 21 september een nieuw reisdocument aanvragen.

Het verbaast niet dat de aanleg en gebruik van deze vingerafdrukkendatabase op gespannen voet staat met het grondrecht op privacy, zoals vastgelegd in artikel 10 van de Nederlandse Grondwet en artikel 8 van het Europees Verdrag voor de Rechten van de Mens. Ook het College Bescherming Persoonsgegevens (CBP), verschillende onderzoekers, hoogleraren en deskundigen op het gebied van informatica, rechtspsychologie, computerbeveiliging en zelfs de Europese Toezichthouder voor Gegevensbescherming hebben zich zeer kritisch uitgelaten over deze ontwikkeling.

De Nederlandse regering wil het doen lijken alsof zij deze database op grond van Europese wetgeving aanlegt. Maar dat is niet het geval. Het doel van de Europese wetgeving is alleen het verifiëren van de houder van het paspoort of identiteitskaart en de authenticiteit van het document. Wij vinden het onaanvaardbaar dat deze gegevens kunnen worden gebruikt voor een ander doel. Het is nog niet te laat: de centrale database is er nòg niet.

Hieronder mijn opzegging van wegenwacht totaal pakket van de anwb.

Dit heb ik opgezegd i.v.m. de goedkeuring van de kilometerheffing door anwb.

Ik blijf niet betalen voor een organistie die zoiets wil goedkeuren.!!

Ik dacht voordat het verlengd word meteen opzeggen!

De brief:

Geachte heer/mevrouw,

Bij deze beëindig ik mijn lidmaatschap bij u PER DIRECT.
Mijn persoonsgegevens die u hier voor nodig heeft staan onder aan in de brief.
Ik wil niet dat mijn abonnement automatisch verlengd word .

Reden hiervoor:
Het achterwegen laten van steun voor uw eigen klanten ,
en het benadelen van andere weggebruikers.
En onvoorwaardelijke steun aan schandalige plannen.

Ik kan alleen maar hopen dat meer mensen mijn voorbeeld volgen en u laat zien dat u als organisatie af heeft gedaan vanwege uw onsmakelijke rol in de invoering van de kilometerheffing.

Ik kan alleen maar zeggen bij uw concurrent (www.routemobiel.nl)ben ik ook nog eens flink goedkoper uit.
Ondanks een stormvloed van mails, allen met gegronde redenen, tegen de kilometerheffing gaat u akkoord (mits de spitstarieven goed zijn bevonden) met bovenvermelde heffing.

Privacy-schending.
Hierbij spreekt u over geen privacy schending op uw site terwijl u weet dat de gegevens van het
gps-systeem , dus inclusief plaats tijd en locatie, regelrecht naar een centrale opslag worden gestuurd en word bewaard. Mijn persoonlijke gegevens dus!
U weet wel te melden dat er voor justitie eventueel meer opsporingsmogelijkheden zijn terwijl u eerst uw klanten gerust stelt dat er geen privé gegevens worden verstuurd. Dit spreekt elkaar behoorlijk tegen!Dit ondanks de vele , goedkopere, eerlijkere en niet privacy-schendende mogelijkheden die veel beter en goedkoper zijn in te voeren.

Diefstal identiteit
Alles wat door de lucht word gestuurd kan door een apparaatje opgevangen worden.
Als de gegevens van mij op zouden worden gevangen kan de persoon op mijn naam gaan rondrijden.
En waar kan ik dan terecht? Wie betaald mijn proceskosten?

Oneerlijke belasting van de burger
Met uw advies stemt u in met oneerlijke belasting van de burgers. Namelijk een burger met een oude auto (en laag loon) kan enorm veel gaan betalen. Terwijl een yup met een dikke knip lekker een enorme (extra) grote,zware pooierbak kan gaan kopen. Dankzij de afschaffing van de aanschaf-belasting (nou dat is milieu bevorderlijk zeg?!). De yup kan naast goedkoop een auto kopen dus ook nog eens goedkoop rijden (weinig eurocent per km vanwege zijn nieuwe “zuinige” pooierbak).

Variabele kosten
In hoeverre is het mogelijk dingen vast te leggen betreffende deze flexibele
belasting heffing?

File-belasting
Spitstarieven.......dit is gewoon al een te gek onderwerp om over na te denken.
Omdat de overheid niks aan de echte problemen doet moet iedereen en weer vooral de mensen die elke dag op de zelfde tijd naar hun werk moeten gaan betalen, om elke dag in een file vast te staan? En dus niet de yup die zijn eigen tijd kan indelen en de files kan mijden(nog een voordeeltje).
Te bespottelijk om te overwegen. Het falen van de overheid verhalen op de burger .
En toch doet u het!!
U weet best dat de mensen geen keus hebben om op andere tijden naar het werk te gaan!!!!

Flinke waardeverminderingen auto's
Een echte oplossing is er ook nog niet voor al die mooie dure auto's die nu zijn gekocht.
Die zijn na invoering van de kilometerheffing ineens niks meer waard. Dit omdat de aanschafbelasting niet meer bestaat. Leuk waarde verlies. Hoest het maar ff op.

Aanschaf kastje en onderhoud beurt
Waar ik ook niks over hoor is dat het k..kastje niet geheel kosteloos is voor de belastingbetaler.
Bij aanschaf moet er een deel worden betaald door de autorijder.
Die dingen zullen ook wel om de zoveel keer moeten worden gekeurd.
Ook de kosten van de burger?

Vernieling privé eigendom

Dat kastje moet worden ingebouwd in de auto.

Die auto's is het privé eigendom van de chauffeur!

Ik wil niet zo'n gps kastje in mijn auto.

En als ik gps een beetje ken moet de antenne vrije hemel hebben. Moet ik dat kreng dadelijk op mijn mooie dashboard gaan bouwen?

Niet dat ik hem onder mijn motorkap wil hebben. Ik wil helemaal niets op mijn eigendom wat ik er niet zelf wil hebben !

Waar kan ik terecht bij misstanden
Waar kan ik terecht met misstanden.
En sterker nog hoe moet ik mijn zaak verdedigen?
Alle gegevens zijn opgeslagen,goed of fout. Hoe zou ik me ooit kunnen verdedigen?
Dit is niet te doen.

Transportsector
Wat betreft het vrachtverkeer. De binnenlandse transportsector zal het nog
moeilijk krijgen dan. Vervoerders zullen waarschijnlijk lage loon arbeiders met eigen trucks inhuren. Zodat ze over de Nederlandse wegen kunnen rijden zonder kastjes zoals
tachograaf en kilometerheffing-kastje. En dan is sjoemelen een kinderwerk.
En verhalen van boetes/kilometers zeer moeilijk en arbeidsintensief omdat die mensen met hun
eigen trucks rijden. Om het nog maar niet te hebben over de doorberekening van vervoerskosten op de producten in de winkel.

On November 16, 2001 the AC was turned off and the emergency power of the reactor does not work. At the last moment is a meltdown not happened. A meltdown is the worst nuclear accident imaginable.

The leaflet has recently distributed door-to-door in several places, including the four big cities. The layout gives the impression the folder coming from the government, which "obviously not" the case, reports the bijleveld.

Bijleveld calls the folder tasteless, including the associations with the Holocaust because that folder might pose. She hopes that people realize that the folder does not come from the government and that they must not get confused.

The folder is the logo of the national government, together with the text "The New Kingdom goes further than you think. It seems to be a stunt that a group called the 'New Kingdom' protests against the central storage of fingerprints to be taken in issuing new passports.

The political bastards in the netherlands want to tax the usage of the peoples cars

Every km u have to pay eurocents.

The hight is depending on the age the car is and how much polution it inflicts.

when you hav an old car you might have to pay 9 eurcents eand when you have a brand new car you maybe have to pay 3 eurocents.

This means rich people can buy the newest and cleanest cars. And the poor suckers whit a minimal wager can pay the full costs.

There is no alternative cause dutch public transportation is realy bad,to expensive and in some places almost not existing(although this is a very small country).

Also nothing is done to improve the infrastructure, with the tax money payed in earlier days .

This is why we all have to wait in line (traffic jam) when we go to work and go back to home after working, every day!

This problems with traffic jams actually is the excuse to tax us (it would resolve the problem??)

But there is no renewall of roads and so the known infrastructural problems keep excisting .
So actually they want to tax the problem instead resolve the problem.
Bottomline we have to pay to stand in a traffic jam.

This would be oke if the prices were right and just.

When they impose the tax some things change:
1_No tax payed for buying a car
2- regional taxes disappear.(so they say)
3- you have to pay per km. (this is a flexible amount)

4-our transportation sector wil be taxed to.

5-fuel prices keep the same prices(very high, 1,50 euro per liter petrol. This is because of taxes)

6-GPS box installed wich monitors every move.

Point 1:

No taxes required anymore when buying a new car sounds great.

But .... You have to consider that a new car has high taxes this means when you buy a new car its suddenly very cheap.

But an old car hasnt got a high tax on the car so if you buy an old car you dont benifit.
So again the rich get richer and the ppoor poorer.
I cant buy a new car so i pay almost the full amount asked for the car and on top of that i have to pay the highest tax per km because its an old car and "polutes".

And there is talk about raising the age even more.

This means the most hard working poorer population very often allready dies before 65 and most cant benifit from the old age . Again the rich wich commonly are healthier because of work conditions and beter food (wich they can afford) are the ones who have all the benifit off people dying before 67. They (the death) pay in a way the elderly benifits of the rich.

(elderly benifits is an insurance in this country paied for by all people)

Banks lost money , insurance companies lost money. Not because it a bad time but because they did stupid things whit it.

These days, you can get soy versions of just about any meat -- from hot dogs to buffalo wings. If you're lactose-intolerant you can still enjoy soy ice-cream and soy milk on your cereal. If you're out for a hike and need a quick boost of energy, you can nibble on soy candy bars.

Soy is a lucrative industry. According to Soyfoods Association of North America, from 1992 to 2008, sales of soy foods have increased from $300 million to $4 billion. From sales numbers to medical endorsements, it would seem that soy has reached a kind of miracle food status.

In 2000 the American Heart Association gave soy the thumbs up and the FDA proclaimed: "Diets low in saturated fat and cholesterol that include 25 grams of soy protein a day may reduce the risk of heart disease." Over the course of the last decade medical professionals have touted its benefits in fighting not just cardiovascular disease, but cancers, osteoporosis and diabetes.

But soy's glory days may be coming to an end. New research is questioning its health benefits and even pointing out some potential risks. Although definitive evidence may be many years down the road, the American Heart Association has quietly withdrawn its support. And some groups are waging an all-out war, warning that soy can lead to certain kinds of cancers, lowered testosterone levels, and early-onset puberty in girls.

Most of the soy eaten today is also genetically modified, which may pose another set of health risks. The environmental implications of soy production, including massive deforestation, increased use of pesticides and threats to water and soil, are providing more fodder for soy's detractors.

China - somehow survives the current onslaught of modernization

Pingyao and its residents have existed peacefully amid wild changes in China. The city is a popular destination for visitors who want to experience life inside the walls.

PINGYAO, China–Cobblestoned streets are closed to cars and filled with cyclists, some who ladle noodle soup from pots attached to their bikes. Lining these routes are hundreds of ancient government offices and traditional homes with sloped clay roofs and secluded courtyards.

Three-storey dun-coloured walls made of bricks and caked-on mud encircle it all, running six kilometres around the classical city and connecting 72 watch towers.

Such well-preserved cultural remnants are rare in China, where buildings are torn down and replaced with shiny skyscrapers at an amazing rate. But Pingyao, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, somehow survived the carnage of the country's Cultural Revolution and the current onslaught of modernization. It's a place where visitors can venture back into a historic Middle Kingdom that has been bulldozed almost everywhere else.

So it's not surprising hordes of tourists from all over the country arm themselves with heavy cameras and breech the city's defences, descending from tour buses parked outside the gates to march on the souvenir stalls in the centre.

Jackie Deng, a lifelong resident who runs the popular Harmony Guesthouse, told me the city has received an increasing number of visitors in recent years.

"It's especially popular on weekends," he said.

Deng explained the city was built in a turtle shape, with the south tower serving as the head, four gates representing the feet and the imposing central tower the heart. For some reason, while other cities – such as Beijing – had their walls razed either during the Cultural Revolution or afterwards, Pingyao was left alone way out in the middle of Shanxi province

The coming to power of Hugo Chávez in 1998 represented an important change in the world situation. This was the first government to come to power which did not embrace the ruthless ideas of neo-liberalism which had dominated every government and ruling elite throughout the 1980s and 1990s. The coming to power of Chávez thus represented a significant positive development. The Chávez regime enacted a series of popular reforms, especially in health and education, which the CWI and workers in Venezuela and internationally enthusiastically supported.

The radical populist policies enacted by Chávez rapidly aroused the wrath of US imperialism and the Venezuelan ruling class which tried to overthrow it. The struggle in Venezuela has passed through different phases and twists and turns in the situation. Now it has entered a new and critical phase. Initially, Chávez spoke only of a ‘Bolivarian revolution’. A series of important reform programmes were initiated. The “Misiones” in health (Barrio Adentro) and education (Mision Robinson) were especially popular. One million were lifted out of illiteracy and millions were given access to a doctor for the first time. Three million were given access to primary and secondary school education. Over two million hectares of land have been distributed to peasant co-operatives since Chávez came to power in 1998. These reforms and other aspects of his programme rapidly brought his regime into open conflict with the oligarchs who had previously been in power and provoked the wrath of US imperialism.

The attempted coup in 2002 and then the bosses “lock-out” in 2002/3 were followed by a series of acts of sabotage, provoking shortages of commodities and electoral challenges. All these attempts at counter revolution were defeated. They were blocked by a massive, independent spontaneous movement of the masses from below. The defeat of these attempts at counter revolution represented important victories.

In 2005, spurred on by these events and the pressure from the mass of the poor and workers, Chávez went further and for the first time declared that the objectives of the Bolivarian revolution were now to build “Socialism in the 21st century”. This, for the first time since the fall of the Berlin Wall, once again put the issue of socialism back on the political agenda and represented a positive development.

De crisis van het kapitalisme is zeker zo erg als in de jaren dertig. De financiële crisis kost de wereldeconomie tot het einde van dit jaar zeker 7300 miljard euro! De bankiers zijn de grote winnaars; ze hebben de economie aan de rand van de afgrond gebracht. Officieel heeft de overheid de banken en financiële instellingen overgenomen en oefent nu ‘toezicht’ uit. In werkelijkheid hebben de banken hun enorme schulden en financiële rotzooi bij de overheid gedumpt met als grote taak die in de komende jaren bij de arbeiders neer te leggen. Wereldwijd moeten staten het geld dat ze aan de financiële sector hebben uitgegeven bij de arbeidersklasse terughalen door bezuinigingen en belastingverhoging over vele en vele jaren. De winsten voor de banken, de verliezen voor de gewone man!

In Nederland gaat het om het onvoorstelbare bedragen van honderden miljarden euro´s. De arbeidersklasse wordt gedwongen deze miljarden in de komende jaren op te brengen. Om ons daarvan een voorstelling te maken: na de vorige zware recessie van 1979 volgden er 20 jaren van bezuinigingen onder Lubbers en Kok voordat de rekening was betaald… Lubbers bezuinigde zo´n 40 miljard gulden, dat is maar een schijntje vergeleken bij de huidige bedragen. De vraag is wat er na het bloedbad van de jaren tachtig en begin jaren negentig nog bezuinigd kan worden op onderwijs en gezondheidszorg, maar kapitalistische kranten spreken nu al over bezuinigingen van 35 miljard euro.

Dit is de harde werkelijkheid. De bankiers, kapitalisten en hun politieke vertegenwoordigers hebben er alle belang bij dat u dit allemaal niet te zwaar opneemt, vandaar dat de kranten en de beurzen een gevoel ademen van: hoezo crisis? De feiten zijn: de werkloosheid gaat volgend jaar naar de 600.000. Kleine zelfstandigen gaan over de kop. Huizenprijzen dalen. Bij de grote bedrijven in Nederland daalden de omzetten met 20 procent en de winsten met bijna 90%. Het kabinet dat de enorme bezuinigingen moet verdedigen, heeft er juist belang bij de zaken niet al te vrolijk voor te stellen. En minister Donner heeft gelijk als hij zegt: “Als een vrije val overgaat in een geremde, moet je niet zeggen dat we er al zijn”. De werkelijkheid is er één van jaren van enorme bezuinigingen die pas later komen, omdat nu bezuinigen de economie zou laten instorten. De werkelijkheid is er één van jaren stokkende koopkracht. De werkelijkheid is een hoge werkloosheid. De werkloosheid is jaren van depressie vanwege het roofgedrag van banken en financiële instellingen. De miljardenuitgaven van de overheid houden de economie nu kunstmatig aan de praat. Als die wegvallen moeten de consumenten weer geld gaan uitgeven en ondernemers weer gaan investeren. Maar die zijn nog jaren bezig hun schulden af te betalen…

Italy pushes for one army in the 'new Europe'

ITALY is to push for the creation of a European army after the "new Europe" takes shape at this week's EU summit following the adoption of the Lisbon Treaty.

Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini said the Lisbon Treaty had established "that if some countries want to enter into reinforced co-operation between themselves they can do so".

This was already the case with the euro and the Schengen accords on frontier-free travel, and could now be applied to "common European defence".

Mr Frattini said yesterday: "We have finally concluded a never-ending story."

The Lisbon Treaty, which comes into force next month, will be sealed tomorrow in an EU summit that will also choose an EU president and foreign minister.

Mr Frattini warned that "if we do not find a common foreign policy, there is the risk that Europe will become irrelevant. We will be bypassed by the G2 of America and China".

EU says it is Not Time to Recognize Palestinian State

The European Union has followed the United States in saying it is not ready to recognize Palestinian statehood, after Palestinian leaders declared they would seek that status at the United Nations.
Speaking to reporters in Brussels, Foreign Minister Carl Bildt of Sweden, which holds the rotating European Union presidency, said the time is not right for recognizing a Palestinian state.
"I do not think we are there yet," he said. "I would hope that we would be in a position to recognize a Palestinian state, but there has to be one first. So I think that is somewhat premature. We have said previously if you go back to what the European Union has said that we would be in a position to recognize a Palestinian state, but the conditions are not there as of yet."
Bildt said the European Union is discussing other steps to increase support for Palestinian aspirations. And at a press conference later in the day, EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana offered strong backing for an eventual Palestinian state.

November 13, 2009 - -Navy Seal snipers rescued an American cargo ship captain unharmed and killed three Somali pirates in a daring operation in the Indian Ocean on Sunday, ending a five-day standoff between United States naval forces and a small band of brigands in a covered orange lifeboat off the Horn of Africa. The New York Times published that article in April 2009. The very words "pirates," "daring operation," "standoff," and "brigands" were typical of the U.S. media; they made it sound as though white-hated cowboys had ridden to the rescue of a town besieged by Billy the Kid and his gang. Having lived in that part of the world as an economic hit man, I knew there was another side to what had happened. I wondered why no one was asking about the causes of piracy.I recalled my visits with the Bugi people when I was sent to the Indonesian island of Sulawesi in the early 1970s. The Bugi had been infamous pirates since the time of the East India companies in the 1600s and 1700s. Their ferocity inspired returning European sailors to discipline their disobedient children with threats that "the bugiman will get you." In the 1970s, we feared that they would attack our oil tankers as they passed through the vital Strait of Malacca.I sat with one of their elders on the Sulawesi shore one afternoon. We watched his people build a sailing galleon, known as a prahu, much as they had for centuries. Like a gigantic beached whale, it was high and dry, propped upright by rows of gnarled stakes that resembled roots sprouting from its hull. Dozens of men hustled about it, working with adzes, hatchets, and hand drills. I expressed the concerns of my government to him, intimating that we would retaliate if the oil lanes were threatened.

The "terrorists" I have found in Andean caves and desert villages are people whose families were forced off their farms by oil companies, hydroelectric dams, or "free trade" agreements, whose children are starving, and who want nothing more than to return to their families with food, seeds, and deeds to lands they can cultivate. The old man glared at me. "We were not pirates in the old days," he said, his bushy white hair bobbing indignantly. "We only fought to defend our lands against Europeans who came to steal our spices. If we attack your ships today, it is because they take the trade away from us; your ‘stink ships' foul our waters with oil, destroying our fish and starving our children." Then he shrugged. "Now, we're at a loss." His smile was disarming. "How can a handful of people in wooden sailing ships fight off America's submarines, airplanes, bombs, and missiles?"

A few days after the rescue, the Times ran an editorial entitled "Fighting Piracy in Somalia" that concluded:
Yet left to its own devices, Somalia can only become more noxious, spreading violence to its East African neighbors, breeding more extremism and making shipping through the Gulf of Aden ever more dangerous and costly. Various approaches are being discussed, such as working through Somalia's powerful clans to reconstitute first local and then regional and national institutions. These must be urgently explored.Nowhere did the Times-or any of the other media outlets that I read, heard, or saw-attempt to analyze the roots of the problem in Somalia. Debates abounded about whether to arm ships' crews and send more Navy vessels to the region. There was that vague reference to reconstituting regional and national institutions, but what exactly did the author mean by that? Institutions that would truly help, like free hospitals, schools, and soup kitchens? Or local militias, prisons, and Gestapo-style police forces?The pirates were fishermen whose livelihoods had been destroyed. They were fathers whose children were hungry. Ending piracy would require helping them live sustainable, dignified lives. Could journalists not understand this? Had none of them visited the slums of Mogadishu?
Finally, NPR's Morning Edition on May 6 aired a report from Gwen Thompkins; she interviewed a pirate who went by the name Abshir Abdullahi Abdi. "We understand what we're doing is wrong," Abdi explained. "But hunger is more important than any other thing."
Thompkins commented, "Fishing villages in the area have been devastated by illegal trawlers and waste dumping from industrialized nations. Coral reefs are reportedly dead. Lobster and tuna have vanished. Malnutrition is high."

You might think we would have learned from Vietnam, Iraq, the "Black Hawk down" incident in Somalia back in 1993, and other such forays, that military responses seldom discourage insurgencies. In fact, they often do the opposite; foreign intervention is likely to infuriate local populations, motivate them to support the rebels, and result in an escalation of resistance activities. That was the way it happened during the American Revolution, Latin America's wars for independence from Spain, and in colonial Africa, Indochina, Soviet-occupied Afghanistan, and so many other places.
Blaming pirates and other desperate people for our problems is a distraction we cannot afford if we truly want to find a solution to the crises confronting us. These incidents are symptoms of our failed economic model. They are to our society the equivalent of a heart attack to an individual. We send in Navy Seals to rescue the hostages, as we would hire doctors to perform a coronary artery bypass. But it is essential to admit that both are reactions to an underlying problem. The patient needs to address the reasons his or her heart failed in the first place, such as smoking, diet, and lack of exercise. The same is true for piracy and all forms of terrorism.

Our children's futures are interlocked with the futures of children born in the fishing villages of Somalia, the mountains of Burma (Myanmar), and the jungles of Colombia. When we forget that fact, when we see those children as remote, as somehow disconnected from our lives, as merely the offspring of pirates, guerrillas, or drug runners, we point the gun at our own progeny as well as at the desperate fathers and mothers in lands that seem so far away but in reality are our next door neighbors.
Every time I read about the actions we take to protect ourselves from so-called terrorists, I have to wonder at the narrow-mindedness of our strategy. Although I have met such people in Bolivia, Ecuador, Egypt, Guatemala, Indonesia, Iran, and Nicaragua, I have never met one who wanted to take up a gun. I know there are crazed men and women who kill because they cannot stop themselves, serial killers, and mass-murderers. I am certain that members of Al Qaeda, the Taliban, and other such groups are driven by fanaticism, but such extremists are able to recruit sizable numbers of followers only from populations that feel oppressed or destitute. The "terrorists" I have found in Andean caves and desert villages are people whose families were forced off their farms by oil companies, hydroelectric dams, or "free trade" agreements, whose children are starving, and who want nothing more than to return to their families with food, seeds, and deeds to lands they can cultivate.
In Mexico, many of the guerrillas and narcotraffickers once owned farms where they grew corn. They lost their livelihoods when the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) gave subsidized U.S. producers an unfair price advantage. Here is how the Organic Consumers Organization, a nonprofit that represents more than 850,000 members, subscribers, and volunteers, describes it:

NAFTA eliminated quotas limiting corn imports . . . but allowed U.S. subsidy programs to remain in place-promoting dumping of corn into Mexico by U.S. agribusiness at below the cost of production. . . . The price paid to farmers in Mexico for corn fell by over 70 percent. . .

The passage above exposes the dark side of "free trade" policies. U.S. presidents and our Congress have implemented regulations that prohibited other countries from imposing tariffs on U.S. goods or subsidizing locally grown produce that might compete with our agribusinesses while permitting us to maintain our own import barriers and subsidies, thus giving U.S. corporations an unfair advantage. "Free trade" is a euphemism; it prohibits others from enjoying the benefits offered to the multinationals. It does not, however, regulate against the pollution that is melting glaciers, the land grabs, and the sweatshops.

Father Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann, a Nicaraguan priest who ministered to Sandinista guerrillas and is now president of the U.N. General Assembly, has a firsthand appreciation for such euphemisms and the power of words used to sway public perceptions. "Terrorism is not really an ‘ism,' " he told me. "There's no connection between the Sandinistas who fought the Contras and Al Qaeda, or between Colombia's FARC and fishermen turned pirates in Africa and Asia. Yet they are all called ‘terrorists.' That's just a convenient way for your government to convince the world that there is another enemy ‘ism' out there, like communism used to be. It diverts attention from the very real problems."

Our narrow-minded attitudes and the policies that result from them foment violence, rebellions, and wars. In the long run, almost no one benefits from attacking the people we label as "terrorists." With one glaring exception: the corporatocracy.

Those who own and run the companies that build ships, missiles, and armored vehicles; make guns, uniforms, and bulletproof vests; distribute food, soft drinks, and ammunition; provide insurance, medicines, and toilet paper; construct ports, airstrips, and housing; and reconstruct devastated villages, factories, schools, and hospitals-they, and only they, are the big winners.

The rest of us are hoodwinked by that one, loaded word: terrorist

The current economic collapse has awakened us to the importance of regulating and reigning in the people who control the businesses that benefit from the misuse of words like terrorism and who perpetrate other scams. We recognize today that white-collared executives are not a special, incorruptible breed. Like the rest of us, they require rules. Yet it is not enough for us to reestablish regulations that separate investment banks from commercial banks and insurance companies, reinstate anti-usury laws, and impose guidelines to ensure that consumers are not burdened by credit they cannot afford. We cannot simply return to solutions that worked before. Only by adopting new strategies that promote global environmental and social responsibility will we safeguard the future.

Inval bij farmaceutische bedrijven

De Inspectie voor de Volksgezondheid heeft invallen gedaan bij de farmaceutische bedrijven GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) in Zeist en Sanofi Pasteur MSD in Hoofddorp. ZEMBLA onthult in de uitzending ‘Het omstreden kankervaccin’ van zondag dat de Gezondheidsraad is beinvloed door farmaceutische bedrijven. De Inspectie heeft de invallen gedaan omdat ze vermoedt dat de bedrijven de Geneesmiddelenwet hebben overtreden bij de marketing van hun vaccins voor baarmoederhalskanker.

Uit ‘Het omstreden kankervaccin’ blijkt dat de adviescommissie van de Gezondheidsraad, die minister Klink van Volksgezondheid heeft geadviseerd om het vaccin tegen baarmoederhalskanker op te nemen in het Rijksvaccinatieprogramma, voor een deel bestond uit leden die een binding hebben met de farmaceutische industrie.

Daarom zijn enkele van deze leden later in het eindrapport opgenomen als adviseur. Zo konden zij tijdens de vergaderingen van de commissie wel meepraten, maar hadden ze bij het geven van het advies officieel geen stemrecht. Dat blijkt uit vergaderstukken van de Gezondheidsraad, waarover ZEMBLA beschikt. Deze documenten zijn te zien in de aflevering ‘Het omstreden kankervaccin’, dat zondag 19 oktober om 22.10 uur wordt uitgezonden bij de VARA/NPS op Nederland 2. Na de uitzending zijn deze documenten ook op deze site te vinden.

Schijn wegnemen

Eén van de adviseurs uit het eindrapport is prof. C. Meijer. Hij zit in de speakerscorner van farmaceutisch bedrijf GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) en heeft van het bedrijf € 250.000,- gekregen voor onderzoek. Meijer was lid van de commissie en werd op het eind adviseur genoemd. Hij verklaart over zijn statuswijziging: “Stel dat ik lid was gebleven, dan hadden de mensen gezegd: zie je nou wel…. En om die schijn weg te nemen, heb ik er niets op tegen dat ik adviseur ben… Maar in de praktijk verandert er niets.”

Een andere adviseur, dr. W. Quint, heeft een bedrijf dat onderzoek verricht voor verschillende farmaceutische bedrijven, waaronder GSK. Hij verklaart: “Om alle schijn van belangenverstrengeling te vermijden, hebben we besloten dat ik adviseur werd. Ik vond zelf dat ik gewoon lid had kunnen blijven.”De voorzitter van de commissie, prof. J. van der Noordaa, zegt dat hij op de hoogte is van de banden tussen commissieleden en de industrie: “Ik ken die mensen allemaal als integere wetenschappers. Al die mensen die daar zaten, hadden niet de geringste partijdigheid.”

Concurrentie

De afgelopen maanden hebben twee farmaceutische bedrijven een grote concurrentieslag geleverd om er voor te zorgen dat minister Klink van Volksgezondheid hun kankervaccin opneemt in het Rijksvaccinatieprogramma. Het zijn GlaxoSmithKline, dat het vaccin Cervarix op de markt brengt, en concurrent Sanofi Pasteur MSD, producent van Gardasil.

In hun campagne hebben de bedrijven niet alleen artsen, maar ook het publiek bespeeld. Een consultant die drie jaar bij GlaxoSmithKline heeft gewerkt, vertelt in ZEMBLA dat het haar opdracht was om ervoor te zorgen dat de media uitgebreid over de ziekte baarmoederhalskanker zouden berichten: “Ik zocht mensen die baarmoederhalskanker hebben gehad om ze door de bladen te laten interviewen. Soms liet ik iemand met baarmoederhalskanker zelf naar de Viva of de Margriet bellen. Ik vertelde niemand dat ik voor GSK werkte.”

Petitie

Ze opende ook een website over baarmoederhalskanker, waarop later een petitie werd geplaatst die voor minister Klink bestemd is. Hem wordt gevraagd haast te maken met de invoering van het vaccin. Bijna tweehonderdduizend mensen tekenen de petitie.Het is één van de websites die - zonder dat het voor de bezoekers duidelijk is - wordt samengesteld door de industrie. De consultant daarover: “Het is in Nederland verboden om reclame te maken voor receptgeneesmiddelen, dus de farmaceutische industrie maakt vooral reclame voor de ziekte, mensen bang maken. En vaak wordt het probleem nog groter gemaakt dan het is.”

In beslag

Bij de inval heeft de Inspectie interne documenten in beslag genomen, zoals e-mailwisselingen met artsen, voorlichtingsmateriaal, marketingplannen, overeenkomsten met artsen en wetenschappers en instructies aan artsenbezoekers.

De Inspectie vermoedt dat er sprake is van verboden gunstverlening aan artsen en wetenschappers. Ook zijn de reclameregels mogelijk overtreden, aangezien het in Nederland verboden is om reclame te maken voor middelen die alleen op recept verkrijgbaar zijn.

Kamerdebat

SP-leider Agnes Kant wil een Kamerdebat naar aanleiding van het nieuws van ZEMBLA. Ze liet zaterdag na de invallen bij de farmaceuten weten met de Kamer praten over de beïnvloeding en agressieve marketing van de farmaceutische industrie.

“Een beslissing voor de invoering van een vaccinatie moet objectief en onafhankelijk gemaakt worden,” aldus Kant. “Marketing, lobby, en financiële banden van adviseurs met de industrie, moeten daarbij uitgesloten worden.”

Last year Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) has delivered what is known as a monitoring center to Irantelecom, Iran’s state-owned telephone company. According to NSN, the servers were sold for “lawful intercept functionality”. This term is used by the cell-phone industry to refer to law enforcement’s ability to “tap phones, read e-mails and surveil electronic data on communications networks”. NSN denies that the monitoring center sold to Iran can be used for monitoring or cencorship of the internet traffic, but it admits that the system has the capability to conduct voice monitoring of local calls on Iran’s fixed and mobile telephone network. (link 2)

True, the monitoring system may be used to prevent criminal and terrorist activities in democratic countries where violation of privacy is subject to court’s permission. But in a country like Iran, “Lawful Interception” means much more than this. It means continuous violation of basic human rights of freedom seekers. So, even if we blindly accept NSN’s statement, it is not difficult to understand that the monitoring system serves the Iranian regime to track, trace and hunt down its opponents, especially on these crucial days. And those opponents are being subjects to arrests, battery, torture, and some of them may be subjects to execution.

Now, at the dawn of the 21st century, the world is looking to China to assume an unfamiliar role of global leadership. At a time when American prestige is fading, China's status is rising.

.President Barack Obama arrives in China next week seeking help on everything from climate change to North Korea's nuclear threat. At meetings of the Group of 20 nations, China's opinions are urgently sought on issues such as banking reform and executive pay. Persuading China to take a lead will be a challenge.

History has done little to prepare this country for the kind of leadership that an anxious international community seems so ready to thrust on it.

Unlike the U.S., China doesn't aspire to remake the world: Its longstanding mantra is "nonintervention" in the internal affairs of other countries

The awarding of development rights over the huge West Qurna oilfield in southern Iraq to Exxon-Mobil and Royal Dutch Shell last Thursday once again underscores the criminal character of the continuing US-led occupation. West Qurna has proven reserves of 8.7 billion barrels of oil. Iraq’s total reserves are currently put at 115 billion barrels, though dozens of potential fields have not been explored adequately. Before the US invasion in 2003, rights over West Qurna had been awarded by the Baathist regime of Saddam Hussein to the Russian oil firm, Lukoil. Al jaren is de q koorts aan het verspreiden aan het broeien in de stallen en op het platteland.

Hier is niks mee gedaan. Pas in april 2009 is er begonnen met inenting van dieren.

Ondanks de vele besmettingen (van mensen) en de doden is hier niets mee gedaan. Op veterinair gebied nieet en op menselijk gebied niet.

Het openbaar ministerie ‘misbruikte‘ z’n macht kopte het Financieele Dagblad, dat zelden zulke grote woorden gebruikt. Maar wie het arrest van het Gerechtshof Den Haag leest stelt vast dat de krant letterlijk citeerde. Het Hof zegt dat justitie ‘op grove wijze’ de rechtsbescherming van een burger heeft gefrustreerd, en ‘in strijd’ met het procesrecht handelde door misbruik van bevoegheden te maken. Gebruikte Justitie procedures om tijd te winnen of gemaakte fouten af te dekken? De rechter is in ieder geval vernietigend. Lees de overwegingen in het arrest onder 3. Beoordeling van het klaagschrift. Het komt zelden voor dat de rechter constateert dat het openbaar ministerie ‘evident’ tegen de wet handelt en op ‘grove wijze’ de burger benadeelt. Toch is dat hier gebeurd.

In oktober 2005 werden op Schiphol 44 dozen met computeronderdelen (CPU’s) op Schiphol in beslag genomen. De douane dacht aan een BTW-carrousel fraude. De eigenaar krijgt echter in juli 2006 te horen dat justitie hem geen verdachte meer vond. Maar op de dozen blijft beslag liggen. Totdat de Haarlemse Schipholrechter in kort geding in juli 2007 Justitie beveelt die dozen eens terug te geven. En daarna gaat het mis.

The 2010 Olympic Winter Games are scheduled to take place from February 12-17, in Vancouver-Whistler on land that was never given up by indigenous communities. For growing numbers of indigenous people, homeless and poor people, low-income tenants and sex workers the Olympic Games represent a continued history of colonization and “social cleansing” of poor communities. Construction for the Olympics infrastructure is adding to extensive destruction of indigenous peoples’ traditional homelands and contributing to the displacement and criminalization of people living in poor urban neighbourhoods.Visible poverty collides with the property and profit concerns of legitimized business, commercial development and property speculators. Neighbourhoods, like Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, undergo a conflict-ridden process of transformation from local residences and workplaces of the poor to sites for Olympic spectacles. As business owners, landlords and investors vie for position within developing neighbourhoods they often successfully pressure local politicians and police to act against sex trade workers and homeless people. Carolyn Brooks, author of Globalization and a New Underclass of ‘Disposable

People' writes, “Criminalizing the poor becomes a way of cleansing the city, making it a supposedly safe and attractive environment for affluent people.” As global capitalism develops, poor and marginalized people are criminalized and punished. Examples of this agenda have become regular features of social development in Vancouver as part of Olympic preparations. In the lead up to the Games, this has typically taken the form of new bylaws and policies that arm police, business owners and private security companies with a variety of means to harass street prostitutes and remove them from specific neighbourhoods. There has also been an ongoing deployment of repressive policing practices, including “sweeps” of street-involved people and the use of boundary conditions to prohibit prostitutes from even entering neighbourhoods near planned Olympic venues. These policies are not about public safety, but about investment, redevelopment and tourist dollars.One troubling policy initiative in Vancouver has been ‘Project Civil City’, a $300,000 program which targets a range of street activities and extends policing beyond public forces, providing business associations broad leeway to intervene. The program includes hundreds of thousands of dollars for increased private security, in addition to regular city police budgets and the estimated $1 billion for Olympic security. The Civil City initiative was explicitly designed to target street prostitutes, panhandlers and open drug users in specific areas such as the Downtown Eastside. Such policies do nothing to address underlying issues of poverty, precarious housing, drug abuse or unemployment. They are effective only at removing people from the streets and getting them

into custody.Following the awarding of the Olympics to Vancouver, the city initiated a program in which public money was directed to business improvement associations to hire private security firms to patrol downtown streets and clear areas of street prostitutes and homeless people. The so-called “Downtown Ambassadors” have been given free reign to intimidate and harass people deemed to be “undesirables.” Their activities include compelling people who are sitting or sleeping on the street to move along, regardless of location or circumstances; telling people to stop searching for recyclables in garbage cans; identifying particular individuals as undesirable and telling them that they are not allowed within a particular geographic area, so-called “no go areas”; and following and taking notes and photographs of individuals identified as undesirable.

Other Olympic-inspired bylaws target the basic everyday activities of street prostitutes and homeless people. Newly installed benches make it impossible for people to stretch out and many bus shelters have removed benches altogether. New garbage cans make it more difficult for people to gather recyclables. In addition, a newly introduced bylaw removes large garbage bins from the Downtown Eastside.

These measures are part of an overall plan to remove downtown residents from the area. In addition to jail, some have been removed to mental institutions and others to “detox” centres on former military bases. Another measure has removed people from the province entirely through a “fly-back” program in which the B.C. Government pays the costs to return persons wanted on warrants in other provinces.Instead of addressing the roots of growing homelessness, poverty and marginalized people, the criminal justice system is deployed to “cleanse” the human face of the problems of global capitalism from the city. Ironically, the pressure to hide these faces is most intense during festivals of global capital such as the Olympics, international film festivals and the FIFA World Cup. These events serve to exacerbate conditions of suffering, exclusion and desperation for the poorest and most marginalized of local working class people in host cities.

Voor het eerst blijkt een patiënt in Nederland een variant van de Mexicaanse griep te hebben die resistent is tegen tamiflu. De ernstig zieke patiënt bleef na behandeling met de virusremmer ziek, meldt het RIVM. Voor de patiënt is dan ook niets meer te doen, behalve een goede verzorging geven en hopen dat de patiënt op eigen kracht herstelt

Dus als het iets niet is bewezen moet er wel een stelling omheen worden gebouwd?!!

Minister van Ontwikkelingssamenwerking Bert Koenders (PvdA) werkt in het geheim aan een militaire missie in Afrika. Het AD schrijft op basis van bronnen in Den Haag en een interne memo dat hij onderzoekt of er Nederlandse troepen naar brandhaarden kunnen worden gestuurd.

Dat zou desnoods zonder samenwerking met andere Europese of NAVO-landen moeten gebeuren. De inzet van de militairen is niet aan de orde zolang zij nog niet zijn teruggetrokken uit Afghanistan. De duurste is met 1239 euro de restitutiepolis van VGZ. Dat concludeert vergelijkingssite zorgkiezer.nl na een vergelijking van de premies van de vier grootste zorgverzekeraars, die negentig procent van de markt in handen hebben.VGZ tekent daarbij aan dat de restitutiepolis slechts één procent van zijn verzekerden betreft en dat de basispolis met 1167 euro aanmerkelijk goedkoper uitvalt.Het verschil tussen de twee is volgens directeur Peter Ruys van zorgkiezer.nl dat de klant bij de goedkoopste verzekeraar is beperkt tot de zorginstellingen die een contract met de verzekeraar hebben getekend. Bijna de helft van de overschrijdingskosten wordt veroorzaakt door een inflatiecorrectie van 46 miljoen euro. Ook een groter ontwerp en hogere staal- en koperprijzen zorgen voor meerkosten. De politiechef van Jeruzalem, Aharon Franco, zei zondag op een persconferentie dat Teitel werd opgespoord door een team van de politie en de binnenlandse veiligheidsdienst Shin Bet. Hij werd begin oktober opgepakt en heeft inmiddels een bekentenis afgelegd. In zijn woning werd een grote voorraad wapens aangetroffen. Aanvankelijk werd achter de aanslagen een ondergrondse groep extremisten vermoed, maar Teitel bleek bij alles alleen te hebben gehandeld.

Hij wordt er onder andere van verdacht in 2008 een pakjesbom te hebben gestuurd aan een joodse sekte. Een 15-jarige jongen raakte door de explosie zwaargewond. Verder zou hij een aanslag met een staafbom hebben gepleegd op een prominente vredesactivist, Seev Sternhell. In 1997 zou hij een Palestijnse taxichauffeur en een boer hebben vermoord.

“We are disappointed that the president has signed a law giving the Defense Department the authority to hide evidence of its own misconduct, and we hope the defense secretary will not take advantage of that authority by suppressing photos related to the abuse of prisoners,” Jameel Jaffer, national security director for the A.C.L.U., said in a statement.

Een dag eerder suggereerde ze nog openlijk dat mensen in de regering van deze verblijfplaatsen op de hoogte moeten zijn.Gevraagd naar het gebruik door de Verenigde Staten van onbemande vliegtuigen om liquidaties van terreurleiders uit te voeren, een werkwijze die zelden door Amerikaanse politici bij name genoemd wordt en ook binnen de CIA zeer geheim is, antwoordde Clinton slechts 'dat er een oorlog gaande is'.In een interview voor de Pakistaanse televisie, dat live uitgezonden werd, kreeg Clinton er behoorlijk van langs van het overwegend vrouwelijke publiek. Een groep hangjongeren gebruikt de parkeerplaats als illegaal racecircuit.
